Rain doesn’t stop IMM from shining

On a rain soaked Saturday evening 10 marching bands and drum corps from across Ireland and the UK walked onto Bridgewater Centre Park in order to compete in the Summer Sounds 2009 Marching Band / Drum Corps Competition.  Not deterred by the driving rain and the howling winds each band braved the elements and carried out some truly remarkable performances.

Competing across the two divisions of Cadet Class and Open Class, the bands were judged on their performances by a panel of eight International Judges.  Cadet Class was won by the Boyle Marching Band from Co. Roscommon and the Clonmel Bluehawks from Tipperary took 1st place in Open Class.

Arklow’s very own Inbhear Mór Marchers, who moved up a division this year to compete with Ireland’s premier bands in the top division, were the last to perform on the night.  The pitch at this stage had become waterlogged, the rain fall had increased and the wind speeds had picked up but the members of the Inbhear Mór Marchers were steadfast in their determination that they were going to perform for the crowd of over 500 people who had gathered to see them.  And what a performance it turned out to be.

As the music and rhythms of the Inbhear Mór’s Marchers 2009 production entitled “Celtic Thunder” carried into the evening air, the audience rose to their feet, clapping and cheering along, as the band, wind beaten and dripping from the driving rains gave their most remarkable performance to date.  After the 11 minutes performance the crowd were still on their feet and the band was treated to a truly rapturous round of applause and a chorus of cheers as they marched from the arena.

The Inbhear Mór Marchers were awarded 3rd place on the day, their highest placing so far this season.  Out of the eight captions that they were judged on, Inbhear Mór Marchers were placed 2nd in four of them, a truly remarkable achievement for a band competing in the elite division for the first time.

Inbhear Mór get major boost courtesy of Senators
News Snipet from
www.drumcorpseurope.org on 21 Jan 2008

Inbhear Mór Marchers from Arklow, Co.Wicklow in the Republic of Ireland have taken a major step forward, thanks to none other than European Champions Senators.

Following their exhibition at DCE finals Inbhear Mór realised that they needed to build up their pit section, an aspect of the activity which is not usually seen in Irish units. Consequently Corps Director Oisin Molloy asked DCE to ask around and see if any corps had pit gear for sale.

Within a few weeks Senators Corps Director Joe Fitzpatrick contacted DCE Project Manager Andy Hewlett to say that the Senators had some pit equipment which they were not planning to use during the 2008 season, and that Inbhear Mór could take it on long term loan. However the Senators were due to move out of their existing headquarters in the Nightingale centre in January, and Joe asked that the gear be collected before then.

So over the Christmas holidays Oisin set off from Arklow in the corps truck and headed for Eastleigh, stopping in Bristol en-route to pick up some 'muscle' namely Andy and DCE Adjudication Manager Tony Mackenzie-Jones. When they arrived in Eastleigh it was soon evident that the journey had been extremely worthwhile, as the Senators had provided a superb range of equipment, including marimbas, xylophones and other pit percussion.

A delighted Oisin said "On behalf of Inbhear Mór I would like to express our sincere thanks to Joe and everyone at Senators for lending this equipment to us. It is a great opportunity for us to expand the band and I'm confident that it will really enhance our musical program."

It is hoped that the coming years will see more Irish involvement in DCE, both in terms of competing units and judging.
